When a swing gate starts to scrape the ground or the latch no longer lines up, the gate has dropped at the hinge side. The cause is almost always a worn hinge, a heaved or leaning post, or a frame that has racked out of square, and each needs a different fix.
You can tighten obviously loose hinge bolts, but if the post has shifted or the frame is out of square, tightening won't hold. A lasting fix usually means re-hanging the gate and, where frost has heaved the post, resetting the footing below the frost line.
